The Enbrel (Etancercept) is a powerful immunosuppressant drug manufactured by Amgen and Wyeth, that is approved by the FDA for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and anklyosing spondylitis. It is also commonly prescribed off-label to patients suffering from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Enbrel has been linked to serious side effects including: lymphoma, solid tissue cancers, tuberculosis, histoplasmosis, blood disorders, serious infections, congestive heart failure, and central nervous system disorders. Enbrel has received the black box warnings (the strongest FDA warning) for the drug's link to tuberculosis and cancers.
Enbrel is known as a TNF inhibitor, because it works by reducing the effect of Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF), which is a natural part of the human immune system. Other popular TNF inhibitors are Remicade (infliximab) and Humira (Adalimumab).
Enbrel is a TNF inhibitor that's been linked to injuries. Enbrel is used by patients with autoimmune disorders and is designed to suppress the immune system, which can inhibit the body's ability to fight off illnesses.
